Brief Family History:
Maya was born and raised in London, England as an only child. Her parents, Dexter and Yingrui were raised in completely different worlds. Her father, Dexter, was raised as a pure-blooded wizard, in pureblood society; her mother was raised a muggle-born. Her traditions and the traditions of Dexter came together to give Maya a very culturally diverse life. Having those many different traditions made Maya appreciative of the value of different ways of life. Even though, growing up with two cultures meant double the holidays (and therefore chances to receive presents), Maya was never spoiled. This was partly due to her parents lack of real wealth, and partly due to her parents unwillingness to let her grandparents spoil her. That isn't to say that she was deprived of anything. If she wanted something badly enough, all she needed to do was to work for it (simple chores around the house or even just helping out her mother or father with simple tasks). Having been raised in a family where she had to work to get the things that she wanted, Maya is no stranger to knowing the value of hard work and she knows, fairly well, how to separate the things she wants from the things she needs.
Being a daughter of a big family, Maya has always had her cousins, Oliver and Penelope and even little Xiaolong, to keep her company and to play with. She attended etiquette classes with them (something her paternal grandparents insisted on as they wanted to keep the appearance of high society blood status, even if Maya's mother was a muggle-born.) However, Oliver and Penelope are a year younger than her, which means that she will be entering Hogwarts a year before them. This saddens her and also frightens her a bit. Though she has always known that she will attend Hogwarts when she is old enough, she never realized that it would be without her two best friends.
Besides this, Maya has only one other concern about Hogwarts. Quidditch. When she was five, Maya had a bad fall from a deck in her maternal grandmothers back yard. She doesn't remember landing, just the feeling of falling, and ever since then she had had a terrible fear of heights. She is worried that she will not meet anyone who would be willing to accept her fear of Quidditch as it is such a widely popular game.
Strengths (Including Personality and Academic):
Maya is a very hard worker when she knows she had to be. When it comes to studies or housework she doesn't stop until it is done. Even when met with hard challenges she will give her all to try and overcome them. Because of her fathers job at an apothecary, Maya has learned a lot from him and is bound to be good at potions. This as well as her mothers stories from working in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures might give her small in sight on Care of Magical Creatures, though that wouldn't come about until third year anyway.
Weaknesses (Including Personality and Academic):
As she's had to work with her mother and father, Maya really doesn't know how to play hard. Sure she does play with her cousins, but they really initiate games. This coupled with her extreme fear of heights has given her an aversion to Quidditch and may cause problems in procuring relationships. As she spends most of her time with her parents who barely use their wands and her cousin who don't have wands, Maya would find most wand use classes difficult. She has very rarely seen her parents demonstrate their wand work, as her mother was raised a muggle and is used to living with out wands and her fathers main work requires very little if any wand work. Therefore Charms, Transfiguration, and DADA would be a challenge for her.
What House You Feel Your Character Belongs In and Why:
Maya is a Hufflepuff. The way she was raised has forced her to develop a very good work ethic and being from two different cultures has also given her a larger sense of respect and loyalty. There is no other house that would fit her better.
